The North Sea – Our Sea

Storm floods, wide mudflats, high dunes and rugged coasts

With some other esteemed colleagues, we gathered images for this noteworthy film – not to be missed! In total we shot for about 2000 days above and below water. Finally, we came back from “our” sea with rare and spectacular shots.

North Sea beaches attract not only holidaymakers at all seasons, but also countless seals. The North Sea is one of the most important hubs for migratory birds. The sea at our doorstep is filled with extreme variety and surprisingly unknown, its diverse underwater world often difficult to access.

Giant basking sharks, up to seven metres long, the second largest fish in the seas, appear off the chalk coast of Dover, for example. In the fjords of Norway lurk the even rarer Greenland sharks. They become very old as they make their way through the ice-cold deep sea. Every spring, the Oosterschelde in the Netherlands becomes home to colourful squids that come there to mate and spawn.

The German North Sea also has a lot to offer: Off Sylt you meet porpoises with their young, the smallest of all whales. They are often confused with dolphins and are extremely difficult to film. Spectacular grey seal fights take place on the beach of Helgoland for a few days every year.

Last but not least: The Wadden Sea. It is one of the most productive habitats on earth. In spring and autumn, masses of migratory birds create breathtaking flying spectacles over the North Sea, the sea on our doorstep – as we have never seen it before.

The latest technology is used throughout the film: high-speed cameras make an optical treat out of the flight of the bass gannets, underwater cameras show stirring images of grey seals, fighting lobsters or even the strange Greenland shark that lives in the depths of Norway’s northernmost fjords. Fantastic aerial sequences – shot with elaborate Cineflex technology – of all coasts and outstanding landscapes around the North Sea, complete the picture.
