The Kinabatangan rises from the dripping wet mountains of Borneo. In the green heart of the island, it winds its way through species-rich jungles and impenetrable mangrove forests. Finally, it flows into the Sulu Sea with its lush coral reefs.

The river with its richly branched tributaries is an important lifeline for many animals and plants. Large parts of its approximately 4,000 square kilometre flood area are protected and form an important retreat for numerous species.

Here live the rare Borneo dwarf elephants, saltwater crocodiles, orangutans, hornbills and the bizarre proboscis monkeys. Other curiosities of the Kinabatangan jungle are flying snakes and flying lizards.

“Borneo’s Secret Kingdom” shows a constantly changing river labyrinth and captures the biodiversity of the Kinabatangan in impressive images.

For several months we were on the river Kinabatangan in Sabah on behalf of National Geographic. For this three-parter, we were booked as the main camera team and delivered most of the spectacular pictures.
